How to Word a WhatsApp Wedding Invitation (With Examples)

A wedding invitation carries more weight than almost any other kind of invite, so it's worth getting the wording right even when you're sending it digitally rather than on a printed card. The good news is that a well-designed animated invite already carries a lot of that weight visually, which means the wording itself can be warmer and more direct than a formal printed card would allow.

The details you can never leave out

• Both names, spelled exactly as you want them read.
• The date, written in full (day, date and month), never assumed from context.
• Start time, and if there's a separate ceremony and reception time, both.
• Full venue name and address, plus a maps link if the venue is hard to find.
• Dress code, if you have one. Guests will ask if you leave it out.
• An RSVP deadline and a simple way to reply.

A formal example

Thandiwe and Sipho request the pleasure of your company as they celebrate their marriage. Saturday, 12 September, ceremony at 14:00, reception to follow. The Oyster Box, Umhlanga. Dress: formal, gold and ivory. Kindly RSVP by 1 September.

A relaxed example, closer to how most invites actually get shared

We're getting married! Join us as Thandiwe & Sipho tie the knot on Saturday 12 September at The Oyster Box, Umhlanga. Ceremony from 2pm, party after. Smart casual, gold or ivory if you've got it. Let us know you'll be there by 1 September, we can't wait to celebrate with you.

Wording for a save-the-date

If your full invite isn't ready but you know guests need travel time, a save-the-date should do exactly one job: lock in the date. "Save the date! Thandiwe & Sipho are getting married on 12 September in Umhlanga. Full invite to follow, but block your calendar now." Wording an RSVP request that actually gets replies

Keep the ask specific and easy to act on: "Please reply YES or NO by 1 September so we can finalise catering." Attaching a reason (catering, seating) makes the deadline feel real rather than arbitrary, and a yes/no reply is far more likely to happen than an open-ended "let us know if you're coming."
